THE MUNICIPALITY OF ORCE

To visit ORCE is to go back in time, to a point when a group of Hominids settled in this spot more than a million years ago. Besides its well known prehistoric remains and its museum, Orce also has an architectural heritage of great worth, of which the Palace of the Segura Family, The Church of Santa Maria, the symbolic castle and the watch-towers of Salar and Umbria are of particular note.

Here, in a land before the dawn of history, you will encounter spectacular landscapes, unique places and above all friendly and open people.

THINGS TO SEE:

The Prehistoric Museum C/Tiendas, 18

Part of the Palace of the Segura, it houses a collection of prehistoric fossils proving a human presence in Orce at least 1.3 million years ago, the oldest settlement in Europe to date. Summer opening hours 10.00 - 14.00 and 17.00 to 21.00. Winter opening hours 10.00 - 14.00 and 16.00 - 18.00. Closed Mondays except holidays. Tickets on sale with discounts for schools and groups.

Archeological remains

At Venta Micena, Barranco Leon and Fuente Nueva. It is possible to visit the sites during archeological digs and watch the archeologists at work.

"Las minas de Silex de la Venta" Look-out Point

Venta del Periate, Sierra de Orce. Situated on a hill 1400m high, in the area of an old prehistoric site from where silex, a type of quartz was mined for tools. Fantastic views of the region.

Santa Maria Church

Plaza Vieja, nn. Opening hours 19.30 to 20.00 in summer and 18.00 to 18.30 in winter.

Fuencaliente Spring

Carretera de Galera (2 km distance) Pleasant recreational area, with bathing area, gardens, barbeque facilities and picnic spot. Open throughout the summer months.

Castillo de las 7 Torres (Castle of 7 towers)

Interesting Eleventh Century Muslim Fortification, and the only remaining example of its kind in the area. The main tower is home to an art gallery run in tandem with the Castril Jose Saramago Cultural Centre.

Palacio de Los Segura

C/Tiendas, 18. A renaissance palace which houses among other things, the tourist office, prehistoric museum and an exhibition room. Its inner patio houses six marble columns which hold up the spacious Castillian-style first floor wooden gallery. It is seen as part of the visit to the museum.
