CAVE
KIDS . . . ACTIVITIES
Need
something to do?
You
may think that cave living can be very quiet - it can be if that
is what you are after. Caves are rural but there is a huge variety
of activities available, with lakes come water sports, with mountain
ranges and woodland comes quad racing and mountain biking. For the
person who enjoys walking you will be spoilt for choice as will
any fisherman.
With
such an expanse of rural landscape you can find many natural parks
- here you will find walks, fresh springs, woodland barbeque areas,
viewpoints, old mines and age old watch towers. In the hamlets of
Fuente Nueva and Venta Micena you can find archaeological digs and
in summer observe some of the excavations - the site in Fuente Nueva
still has eight woolly mammoths left to be dug up! The area itself
used to be a prehistoric lake so many discoveries have been made
including human remains. With such a wealth of history come museums,
there are many of these in the region and well worth a visit.
The
countryside is a good place for nature watching and any woodland
track can be a fantastic place to stop and have a picnic. Some routes
through the wooded mountain sides will require a 4 x 4 but once
at your destination (which is usually the top!) the views are simply
fantastic.
For
the equestrian there are many horse riding schools in the region
as well as further a field, these schools cater for the beginner
and the more advanced. Keep an eye out for open days at farms and
rescue centres - these can be great for the kids, educational and
fun and of course a very worthwhile cause.
Want
to make the perfect paella? Or try your hand at pottery? Local villages
often have free courses and everyone is welcome to go along. You
can even try building techniques and a whole range of other hand
crafts.
